Portuguese film market with growing results
ICA’s 2017 first semester results show an increase in both revenue and audience. National production supported by ICA grows 58% compared to 2016.
In the first half of 2017, there was an increase in gross revenue and in the number of spectators in cinemas in Portugal, of 16.8% and 15.7%, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year. The most watched film in the first six months of 2017 was Fast & Furious 8, with 786,707 spectators.
In the same period, 22 national feature films were commercially released in Portugal. The most watched Portuguese film in this period was JACINTA, by Jorge Paixão da Costa, with 45,200 spectators.
Concerning the production of national films supported by ICA, 15 feature films (eight documentaries and seven fiction) and 12 short films (five of fiction, three documentaries and four of animation) were completed, representing a 58.8% growth over the first half of 2016.
Also worthy of mention are the main international awards for national cinematography: CIDADE PEQUENA (SMALL TOWN), by Diogo Costa Amarante, who received the Golden Bear for best short film at the Berlin Film Festival; NYO VWETA NAFTA, by Ico Costa, winner of the Court Métrage Prix, Cinéma du Réel, France; A FÁBRICA DE NADA (THE NOTHING FACTORY), by Pedro Pinho, with the FIPRESCI Prize, at the Cannes Film Festival.
